If you're like most credit unions, every year you update a strategic plan that never gets fully executed. And when your goals are not accomplished, the strategic vision fades and you resort to reacting to your competition instead of being a leading innovator in your market.

Having facilitated nearly 100 planning sessions, we understand what it's like to develop a strategic plan and then struggle to execute it. But through these experiences we developed a Strategic Planning approach aimed to yield plans that are both impactful and executable.


We will discuss your expectations for a successful planning year, but, we also want to know what we are to expect from your team. We'll learn about your history of planning and customize our process to be consistent with what works best with your team, while retaining the pieces we know will get the job done.


Through pre-planning interviews, surveys, and projects, we will save valuable time collecting ideas PRIOR to the big event, as opposed to wasting time brainstorming and wordsmithing AT the planning retreat.


Involvement drives execution. Therefore we gain consensus from all parties on ideas so the entire team feels a sense of ownership. This ownership drives each individual's commitment to follow through on their assignments.

All credit unions want to grow members and balances. But what activities "LEAD" to this outcome. We want to focus on measures that are predictive of the results you are hoping to achieve.

    Strategic Planning for Operational Success (SPOS)


    Frustrated with the progress you are achieving with your strategic plan?

    Working with Kevin Stang, CUXcel LLC and Rich Jones, Leading2Leadership LLC, we take strategic planning from a one- or two-day event to an end-to-end process that aligns your credit union, top to bottom and bottom to top, strategically, culturally, and structurally.

    Our groundbreaking four (4) phase process will result in your team doing the right work, at the right time, the right way.

    Our pre-planning survey will produce MORE inputs, that are MORE honest, and MORE thought-out, while driving ownership for the plan.

    We'll interview key stakeholders tasked with executing the plan and develop a "Team Engagement Plan" (TEP) that helps align your culture with your strategy.

    We'll transform the Situational Analysis and TEP into a solid strategy while focusing on instilling the disciplines necessary to make the cultural shift.

    A month after the session, objective owners will present their plan for execution. Resources will be validated and so plan can launch immediately.


    The SPOS process puts a great amount of attention on the "human element." Having the right strategy is important, but to get the best results you must focus on those in charge of executing it. Throughout all the stages of this process your credit union is transforming to align your culture with your strategy. Key Principles obtained as a result of the engagement include:

    All four phases of the SPOS engagement force involvement from all team members tasked with implementing the plan. Additionally, mid-level managers who may not be at the planning session will have their voice during the first two phases of the engagement.

    Results drive engagement and instills a mindset of winning. This mindset isn’t as much about holding each other accountable as it is about holding one’s self accountable. We will help instill this principle through the use of unique Scorecard Metrics that help each owner see their influence on the strategy.

    Strategic Objectives will be assigned to individual owners, but everyone is committed to each and every objective that make up the institution strategy. If one person is swept up in their daily activities, the rest will be there too.

    Our focus will be to convey Best Principles, as opposed to Best Practices. A best practice might be to meet weekly so individuals can report progress, while a best principle would be to meet weekly to help each other progress.

    Strategic Planning for Execution


    This alternative to the SPOS engagement is also designed to drive execution of an impactful plan. To build a plan that works, a credit union needs a partner – not an agency. As your partner, we see ourselves as an extension of your management team. We will listen and consider every relevant aspect of your business as we work together to build your plan. We’ve been fighting for credit unions for decades and will proudly guide your credit union in building a groundbreaking strategic plan. Our process begins well before your strategic planning session and doesn’t end until your next year’s session. See the sample timeline below:

Through pre-planning interviews and surveys, we will save more time collecting ideas and less time brainstorming and wordsmithing during the session.


    We will harness your own financials and other research to help guide your team to impactful growth objectives.


We will gain consensus on the pre-planning ideas, then ultimately craft and prioritize key objectives and goals.


After some fine tuning back at the credit union, there will be one final web-enabled session to finalize the plan.


We will facilitate Quarterly check-ups and act as an unbiased source to help drive execution.

    Post-Planning Coaching


    The coaching engagement is a series of meetings both onsite and via web conference. The purpose is simple – keep the team engaged. We will highlight successes and analyze failures while everyone understands this is not just ONE person’s plan, it is the entire team’s plan. We’ll work through obstacles as a team to find solutions to questions such as:

- What are the barriers?
- How can we overcome these barriers?
- How will disruption in one area affect another area?
- What resources need to shift?
- Do we need to adjust our strategy?


    Facilitate Culture Shift
There will be great resistance during the onset, and we will help guide your team through it.

    Create a Cadence of Accountability
Productive team members will thrive in a culture of accountability that is frequent, positive, and self-directed.

    Create and Manage Lead Measures
We will facilitate the creation and tracking of “predictive” measures that lead to achieving your targets.
